You know Giant Pandas are known for eating many pounds of bamboo and for their white and black coats. They eat around 26 to 84 pounds everyday according to the Word Wild Life Fund (WWF). They are kind of big but not too big. They are cute and sweet animals but do not underestimate their cuteness because they have powerful jaws and if they feel under threat, they can use their mouth to bite. Unlike humans, Pandas use their six fingers to hold bamboos firmly so they can eat them. Newborn pandas are so tiny they are 1/900th the size of its mother. Females can weight up to 200 pounds and males up to 300 pounds as adults. Do you know that they were labeled as endangered in the past but thanks to the efforts of people they are now vulnerable? They could have been extinct if people did not make any efforts to stop it.
China is their home, the Yangtze Basin region has their primary habitat. New infrastructure has been damaging their habitat because people are building new railways and roads. This has been isolating pandas preventing them from finding bamboo forests and potential mates. Human development has been the most serious threat. Also, poaching has been another cause for their decline in population. According to Lo Sze Ping, CEO of WWF-China, only 1864 pandas exist in the wild.
In order to keep their population growing, we should support organizations and reserves that have protection programs with high standards. If they are kept in zoos without high quality food, high standards of living, and not much space for them to be free, these zoos should be closed down. We should support reserves that consider these qualities and values. Listen, I am only one person who cannot make a big change but if we all unite together, we can make a huge change. The change starts with ourselves. Let’s stop the abuse to the animals and stop people who harm them.
